Living cost is one of the most frequently asked question from our students before coming to Norway. Therefore, we have collected some information from our current students to give you an idea on how it is like living in Oslo as a student.

 

Monthly expense from international students

 

Housing

There are many different housing options for international students to choose from. When international students apply for priority housing, they can choose from three main housing providers, BSN, SiO and Djakonhjemmet. Rent varies depends on the room type you choose, how many people you are sharing with and location.

 

BSN only provides housing to BI students, with a 5 minutes walk to school. They provide options from single room with shared kitchen and bathroom, couple/family apartment for those who wants to live together and studio for someone who wants to live alone.

 

SiO has multiple student housing for students to choose from all over Oslo. You can easily visit their website to see the full list of housing they offer. They can meet your need of living in the center, close to school or even close to the lake and forest. Here are a some options from SiO that most BI students choose to stay: Bjølsen, Kringsjå, Sogn and Nydalen.

 

Djakonhjemmet is located a few minutes north of Majorstuen, which is a metro station 10 minutes away from school. Here, you can get your own bedroom, but share bathroom and kitchen with several others.

 

Living Expenses

Approximate amount students need per month

 

Grocery: One of the best way to save money is by cooking your own food. Student housing are equipped with kitchen, so students can easily make food by themselves. BI also provides microwave for students to heat up their food. One of the cheapest place to get food is at Grønland, doing grocery shopping there can save you some money!

 

Transportation: 30 day student ticket costs 450 NOK. You can travel within the city unlimited with bus, metro, tram and ferry easily. If you live close to school, then this is an expense that you can save!

 

Phone: There are many companies offering different subscription options for students. You can find monthly payment or pre-paid based on your need. Telia, Telenor, Talkmore or My call are one of the most commonly used among students.

 

Gym: SiO provides gym with affordable price for students from 199NOK. At BI, there is also one gym on campus. Moreover, SiO gym are always close to their student housing. There are also lots of options besides SiO, like SATS, Fitness 24 Seven, Crossfit etc.

 

Other: This part includes eating out, haircut, shopping, parties, going to movies and other small expenses. It can vary a lot from student to student, some might spend more money eating out, going to parties while others might do more shopping or watch movies.
